Revelation #51: What can become an “idol” and cause the sin of “idolatry” in our lives?

What is idolatry? the worship of someone or something other than God as though it were God. Idolatry is sin, and it takes our focus away from God.

Question: What can become an “idol” and cause the sin of “idolatry” in our lives?

A) Things can become idols (ex. a sport or hobby, things, money, food)

B) Humans can become idols (ex. actor, singer, athlete, husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, saints, Mary the mother the God)

C) You yourself can become your own idol (ex. pride, arrogance, greed, self-indulgence, self-centeredness, fame)

Answer: A, B, and C

The world promotes idolatry of “things”, “other humans”, AND “self”.

“You shall have no other gods before Me. “You shall not make for yourself any idol, or any likeness (form, manifestation) of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth [as an object to worship]. You shall not worship them nor serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous (impassioned) God [demanding what is rightfully and uniquely mine], visiting (avenging) the iniquity (sin, guilt) of the fathers on the children [that is, calling the children to account for the sins of their fathers], to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing graciousness and steadfast lovingkindness to thousands [of generations] of those who love Me and keep My commandments. ~Exodus 20:3-6 (AMP)

Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. ~1 Corinthians 10:14 (ESV)

“What profit is the carved image when its maker has formed it?
It is only a cast image, and a teacher of lies. For its maker trusts in his own creation [as his god] When he makes speechless idols. ~Habakkuk 2:18 (AMP)

“Those who regard and follow worthless idols. Turn away from their [living source of] mercy and lovingkindness. ~Jonah 2:8 (AMP)

I’ll unpack what all this means in this episode!

Hidden Battles: Episode #18 – What Does Sin Do To Us?

Today, in this episode, I will skip a couple of chapters from my book “Blinded By Hidden Battles” as we read the story of Jesus (His Story) last week. In this episode, I’m going to ask you to think about “your story” as we do a deep dive into the chapter called “Know Your Sins” … “What is sin and what does it do to us?” I challenge you to take out a notepad and pen and jot down whatever may come up for you when I read this chapter from “Blinded By Hidden Battles.” The impact of sin goes beyond what I will share in this chapter. I will dive into the “science of sin” in another episode.
