Question: What does “the truth will set you free” mean (what “truth” and “free” from what)?

A) The truth is regarding salvation and free from the penalty of sin.

B) Tell the truth or come clean of the lie you told and you’ll feel free from any guilt or shame.

C) This is a man-made saying to get people to stop lying.

Answer: A) The truth is regarding salvation and free from the penalty of sin.

So Jesus was saying to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you abide in My word [continually obeying My teachings and living in accordance with them, then] you are truly My disciples. And you will know the truth [regarding salvation], and the truth will set you free [from the penalty of sin].” ~John 8:31-32 (AMP)
